*** Roberts joined the USAAF, became a LT, went through Navigator training, was assigned to the 8th Air Force in England ( 846th BS , 489th BG ) where he was killed in action on July 24, 1944 as the B-24 he was in took a hit in the left wing causing it to explode and crash over St. Lo France  ... details can be found on the internet.
