South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI) is an
overseas territory
of the
United Kingdom
in the southern
Atlantic Ocean and are Sub-Antarctic islands.
The territory was formed in 1985; previously it was governed as part of the
Falkland Islands Dependencies
. It is a remote and inhospitable collection of islands, consisting of South Georgia – which measures approximately 100 miles by 18 miles and is by far the largest island in the territory – and a group of smaller islands known as the South Sandwich Islands. There is no native population on any of the islands, and the only inhabitants are the British Government Officer, scientists and support staff.
The Sub-Antarctic is a severe environment for any creature to survive in, yet both marine and terrestrial habitats of the Antarctic, contain wildlife which has adapted to the extreme conditions and which effectively utilize available resources. In 2006, SGSSI issued a series of coins to celebrate its native wildlife. These delightful coins depict four of this regions best loved inhabitants, the Rockhopper Penguin, the Elephant Seal, the Humpbacked Whale and the Grey Headed Albatross.

The Elephant Seal; The Southern Elephant Seal is one of two species of elephant seal (the other being the Northern Elephant Seal) and gets its name from its great size and the fact that the adult males have a large proboscis which is used in making extraordinarily loud roaring noises, especially during the mating season. Southern Elephant Seals are found throughout the Sub-Antarctic regions with the population at South Georgia being the largest (it includes about half of the entire species population.)
The obverse of the coin carries a fine effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank Broadley FRBS FSNAD.
The diameter of this finely struck and detailed coin is 38.60 mm and it weighs 28.20 gms.
