Soon after the collapse of
Yugoslavia
in 1990, bloody fighting broke out between the Serbs, Croats and Muslims living in Bosnia-Herzegovina.  Massive inflation followed as all sides tried to finance their war efforts by printing money.  The 1995 Dayton Peace Accords, backed United Nations and NATO forces has more or less restored peace to this troubled area. A new currency was introduced in 1999, called the Konvertible Marka, to replace the badly inflated and discredited previous currencies.  Each Konvertible Marka was backed by one German Mark and could be converted back into German Marks at any time on demand.  This prevented the government from issuing too much money and quickly brought inflation under control.  Now that the German Mark has been replaced by the Euro, Bosnian coins and notes are backed by Euros.
Bosnia-Herzegovina issued this bi-metallic 2 Konvertible Marka coin in 2000, before the introductionof the Euro.  To commemorate that peace had returned to the country the coin features a dove of peace holding an olive branch.
The Central Bank of Bosnia-Herzegovina describes this coin as follows:
"The 2 KM Bi Metal consists of an inner ring of gray
cupro-nickel, the outer ring is of a golden 5.5% nickel brass combination.
The edges of the coin are of a combination milled and smooth surface. The
front of the coin is dominated by the denomination of the coin. The back of
the coin is dominated by the left facing "Dove of Peace" placed in the exact
center. Two indented and inverted triangles are placed on the top and bottom
of the golden ring on both sides of the coin indicating the denomination for
the sight impaired."
The diameter of the coin is 25.75 mm, slightly larger than a USA quarter.
