Once a familiar sight in the waters around South Georgia and the Southern Sandwich Islands the Blue Whale is the feature of a new highly collectable coin, released by Pobjoy Mint on behalf of the Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.
Celebrating this magnificent creature, the coin has been issued in uncirculated cupro nickel and shows a blue whale swimming in the sea with her calf whilst the sun’s rays penetrate the water.
An impressive coin to reflect a truly exceptional creature
Blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus) are the largest animals ever known to have lived on Earth. Measuring up to 100 feet (30 metres) long and weighing almost 200 tons they can consume quantities of up to 4 tons of tiny shrimplike krill each day. Between 10,000 and 25,000 blue whales are believed to still swim the world's oceans, although aggressive whaling in the 1900s drove them to the brink of extinction until 1966 when they came under protection with the International Whaling Commission.
Amongst the earth’s longest-living animals, scientists estimate the average lifespan of a blue whale at around 80 to 90 years, although the oldest whale identified was aged at more than 110 years old. With no real natural predators besides man, these creatures cruise our oceans at over five miles an hour but can accelerate to speeds greater than 20 miles an hour where necessary. Blue whales are also amongst the planet’s loudest animals, and it is thought that in good conditions, blue whales can hear each other up to 1,000 miles away.
The obverse of the coin features an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS. Ian Rank-Broadley is one of the foremost sculptors working today. His effigy of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II has appeared on all UK coinage since 1998 and the Pobjoy Mint has exclusive use of the ‘uncouped’ effigy that appears on the obverse of these coins
