First World Problems! Which Jeep to Drive, a 78 CJ5 or a 90 Wrangler? We are auctioning both, but selling only one and only if the high bid is adequate for the quality of this Wrangler. This 90 Jeep Wrangler was built to potentially replace my 78 CJ5 as I am getting older and to get my better half behind the steering wheel more often (she is not a fan of driving the CJ5 with a big scary V8). This Wrangler was essentially restored in the summer of 2020. I focused on ensuring this Wrangler would survive as long as possible in the northeast environment. The Frame was sandblasted and rust proofed, the body was repainted inside and out with a Mango Cooper color found on 2014 Wranglers and then meticulously assembled ensuring every component worked properly while keeping a completely stock appearance. ENGINE – The engine is the legendary 258 cubic inch (4.2 Liter) straight six. This is carbureted, so it is a bit cold blooded but runs great when warmed up. During the restoration the engine timing set was replaced to eliminate the horrible original plastic timing gear, with new front cover gasket, valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, and front and rear main seals. The engine was cleaned and painted with AMC blue. A new carburetor was also installed. Tuesday Sept 21 a COMPLETE Stainless Steel exhaust system will be installed. DRIVETRAIN – This Jeep is equipped with a three speed automatic transmission, a NP231 transfer case, Dana 35 rear and Dana 30 front axles with 3.55 gears. All these are original components in good working order. The transmission cooler lines are all stainless steel tubing.SUPENSION – The suspension is stock leaf springs and shocks. The front has the factory sway bar and track bar. The rear track bar has been removed, but could be simply reinstalled. BRAKES/STEERING – The Jeep is equipped with power steering and power brakes. The steering column has the tilt option. The front brakes are disc and the rears are 10 inch drum brakes. All components are in good condition and work properly. The brake lines are all stainless steel with the stone guard wrap. All fuel lines are stainless steel with marine grade stainless clamps holding the rubber lines secure. FRAME – The frame as I mentioned was stripped bare and sandblasted. This revealed some minor rust on the rear shock mounts. Those rear shock mounts were cut off and replaced with new mounts and small plate steel sections installed to eliminate the pocket that collects dirt. The inside of the frame was coated with several coats of RusFre body cavity wax and the outside coated with RusFre asphalt based undercoating. All fuel, transmission, and brake lines were replaced with stainless steel lines. The frame was topped with 1” polyurethane body mounts before installing the body. BODY – The body is an original Jeep tub that was stripped bare during the restoration. The few spots of surface rust were sand blasted. The sand blasting revealed a drivers floor board with some pin holes and a small area of thin metal. A 12” by 12” square was cut in the floor and replaced with another 12” by 12” floor section from another body tub. The windshield frame and glass are both brand new. The body shop I hired to paint this Jeep was very disappointed when I told them they were not allowed to spread any bondo on this body to fix any of the small dings, dents or pinch weld dimples. The body and all related pieces were painted separately, allowed to cure inside my shop for a month, then rust proofed with RusFre body cavity wax before being assembled. Almost every nut and bolt was replaced with stainless steel hardware. All metal to metal contact surfaces were coated with RusFre cavity wax before assembly. Anti-seize was applied to all nuts and bolts. The seats are original gray cloth seats in good condition. The carpets are original gray and complete, but we have removed the front section and use only rubber floor mats. The front section of carpet is included and can be simply reinstalled at any time. OPTIONS – This Jeep is equipped with rather few options. The factory 3 speed heater and defrost system is functional. The two speed with intermittent windshield wipers and washer work. All the lights and gauges function properly. The door and tailgate latches and locks all function. The soft top is a Bestop Super Top in great overall condition. This Jeep has been restored from the frame up. The drivetrain and axles are all original and have some light surface rust. I plan to give it a mild lift and re-gear it if my reserve is not met, but this allows you to keep the stock appearance or upgrade it as you may desire. I built this Jeep with the mentality that it will hopefully out survive me; I’m not impressed with new vehicles. They just don’t build them like they used too and don’t get me started with the computer problems associated with newer Jeeps. Here is a chance to buy an unmolested Jeep Wrangler that looks, drives, and feels like new. Feel free to ask any questions and I can supply many more pictures of the Wrangler during the restoration if needed. This will be sold from NEW HAMPSHIRE - NO TITLE - BILL OF SALE ONLY!
